i just checked in on the ikea hotel

well, i haven’t really checked in but i did visited the rooms! but wait, first things first, didn’t you know that ikea has a hotel now? well, it does… but to be honest it’s not what you’re thinking, but it’s not far! they have created 26 bedroom areas in a beautiful garden in lisbon, just like you see above. you know i’m that much of a fan of ikea and every time i get invited for one press conference, i come out even more impressed! that is one amazing marketing company, and i’m not saying this as if they were just telling beautiful stories that have little or no truth in them. the fact is that ikea is much more than you see when going to a store. their presence is much more meaningful for a lot of farmers around the world, as well as for a lot of the global associations with whom their work. in fact, these bedrooms will all be donated to ami and in the end we all got fabric bags (with ikea fabric) sewn by young mothers at ajuda de mãe.

i absolutely love their commitment and marketing orientation for this year about inviting each one of us to create a home that is not for everybody, but for us only. they are really focused on giving people the freedom to be themselves, to search for their character, their personalities, making their days a bit better and of course, also a bit more comfortable and beautiful. because in the end, it’s the little things that count as we know it!

ikea in portugal is also focused in inspiring people to embrace little do-it-yourself projects (inspiring us, even more this year, with the usage of fabrics to change things around! have you noticed that those folks above are wearing ikea fabrics?! fab idea!) and enjoying the outdoor activities, like going out for a bit of music. and to really inspire people to do all this, they have created these bedrooms in three different styles, in jardim da estrela where people will sleep tonight (yes, people who have won the prize to be their guests are actually going to sleep on an ikea bed, with ikea fabrics and comfy pillows… under the stars on a summer night in lisbon!) and then these folks will wake up in the morning, have swedish breakfast, and other activities will start in the meantime for them and whoever wishes to join the party! there will be workshops for the sewing interested (i’d love to go, let’s see if i’m lucky as these are booked upon arrival), workshops for kids about the importance of sustainability in cotton and finally there will be a concert by amanda mair, a swedish musician pretty trendy now in sweden!

i’m not sure if people are actually going to sleep or not, but the experience might be really nice! the fact that the garden closes its doors by midnight allows the guests to feel a little bit more comfortable of course, and after that hour, people are also allowed to move their beds around, to be in the shade when they wake up, or to be in the middle of flowers and trees! as you can see from above, they even thought about the moment they’ll get out of bed and put their feet on the ground… a comfy carpet is there as well! so i hope to have at least inspired you to make a visit! it’s only this weekend, so don’t save for later! have a great weekend!

i just couldn’t believe

when the idea of meeting mr twiggs in alentejo for a few days of vacations, bathing in the sun and eating delicious food, took form, i was even more delighted to think about the trip itself! as i would go alone all the way to the south, i started planning this kind of road trip where i would avoid high-ways and find some hidden treasures of this country! i would lug around with my three cameras and would stop every time i felt the need! one place i wanted to visit first, as i had never been there, was portinho da arrábida. and my friends… i just couldn’t believe my eyes. it was paradise 40km away from lisbon! how could i miss this for so long?

i was in awe when i got to this place. the colour of the ocean, the white sand, the pastel colours all over the place, the mountain behind, the beautiful and extraordinary colours of nature were making my head spin! i just kept asking myself how could i have missed this for so long? this was heaven! the thing about this place is that behind us is the natural park of portinho da arrábida, which is made if several white rocky mountains with trees all over the place. so imagine this, white rocky mountains, green trees and bushes ending on this magnificent white sand beach with some crystal blue waters… on a sunny day!

then i went back through the natural park and i had a gorgeous view from above, i was always trying to find a way to stop the car and embrace all this. funny that i also found a convent in the middle of the park… with this view. oh and yes, i know i said i wouldn’t be blogging much, but i just can’t resist! i feel that a lot of you are away, and i’ve also been away from facebook and everything, because i’m working on something that has taken all my days! the redesign! i’m learning so much, trying so many things, i’m so excited and yet also very confused! will share more about that later of course!

oh and thank you so much for your comments on this post! it made my day! i was feeling kind of lonely with the lack of comments on the blog! ah, true!

are you a spectator of your own life?

this quote has been around on the web (found it here through my good friend suzie) and it made me think and finally i found the words for some of my thoughts. so let’s start with some basic thoughts, shall we? we all have cameras and nowadays most of us (actually i’m not included) have internet on our phones. so eventually we’re online most of the time and we are able to document everything we do.

actually i remember when instagram was spreading everywhere and everyone was admittedly addicted, some started to complain about the huge amount of a) pictures looking exactly the same and b) too many details about every one’s life (like “who cares about your 6th coffee this week?”).  then people started to complain less and maybe some of those actually got hooked as well. i still don’t know what instagram feels like, i still don’t have an iphone, i still don’t have a phone with internet capabilities (not even a camera even!) and if you ask me i’d say i want it all. but i have my own doubts and concerns. it’s like being that grumpy old man saying that internet thing is crazy and i’ll be good without it. i’m afraid that steve jobs left a legacy that we cannot pretend not to care about, even if we want really badly to stay outside the party, we know that a part of us just wants to join!

but on the other hand, as many other things, we do need to find the balance. balance between appreciating what we’re having, we’re feeling, we’re looking at, and documenting it. we are social animals, so we need to connect (out of a sudden i just reminded myself that i want to watch into the wild again!), but we must not forget to actually live things, share those things with the ones that are with us at the time, and after it, share them with the ones that are not there. documenting helps us with our memories. i must say that i have a lousy memory, so this helps me a lot to remember (and somehow relive) what i saw and what it felt like. but sometimes (and though i have a camera with me 70% of the time) i just want to embrace and not take the camera out. it will feel like if i take a picture, i’ll be missing something that is happening there before my eyes. and looking at it through my laptop later will definitely not feel the same. but of course, i also struggle with the idea on my mind “take a picture, you need to share this on facebook!”.

well, my advice is donate some money so that i can buy an iphone (kidding!), and enjoy your summer my friends! go out, stay away from the computer, disconnect from the web, forget about twitter, facebook and instagram and just enjoy your days. ok, you may take a few pictures but share them in september, but don’t take too much, just enjoy the ones you’re with! and now just grab a beer and watch a sunset! when was the last time you did that?

the ugly feet

oh i’m so thrilled today because i have finally edited all my summer vacations photos! but please don’t worry because i won’t be posting them all… at once! kidding, i won’t be even posting them all, of course! i think it’s a matter of respect and care for you, to take some time choosing the very best and if possible divide them into sub-topics! and that’s what i’m doing today as i chose ugly feet to be that first topic (really??). well, do you have beautiful feet? i’m so jealous of you!

mr twiggs is always making fun of my feet (as if he wasn’t bald! yes, we’re always teasing each other about our gorgeous features!), but hey those are the ones i have and maybe their lack of beauty comes from the years i wore high heels. and who cares about that when i know i had some gorgeous high heels? well, move a couple of years later and i don’t actually put on high heels that much, but on the other hand, i love to take these kind of pictures… yeah, i know, tremendously a cliche! and by the way, did you know that i have a feet oriented project? yes, on film! take a sneak-peek on my film photography blog, please!

ah those were the days, when i could rest after lunch and read something on this hammock bed my friends brought. it was my first time on such thing, can you believe it? yes, i’m such a newbie on so many things! and yes, one time i did fall to the side, fortunately i could hold on to my camera high enough so that it could be safe! and now i’m off to edit some wedding pictures and prepare some really good news to the etsy shop (you know, calendars and stuff!). how’s your summer going so far?
