wednesday find :: therese sennerholt

today i thought it would be nice to finally bring therese sennerholt’s posters to this feature! therese is a swedish art director that is well-known in the interior design field. she has worked in advertising, editorial, graphic and corporate identity. she has recently started to produce graphic posters with saying and popular quotations that ended up being a success and now you can find them on therese’s webshop, as well as on some retailers. her style is undeniably scandinavian and minimalist, where black and white complement each other, bringing out the best of each colour and the details around.

the reason why i am a fan of these posters is exactly by their simple & minimalist look and quotes. therese made up some of the quotes, as well as used some well-known quotes. i’m particularly fan of this last one about chocolate, because… well, you know, it’s chocolate and why wouldn’t we eat chocolate in rough and good times? it’s a bit like my relationship with wine, it’s good to drink a good wine when times are rough as well as to celebrate!

it’s obvious that i also stand behind this confucious quote about getting a job that we love, as i’ve been doing that for the past year! and wouldn’t it be good if we all loved what we do? wouldn’t this be a better place? wouldn’t we be happier and more fulfilled?

there you go, wine again… and cheese! i’m such a fan of therese sennerholt period! and as you can see, there’s no need for a frame, you can do a great work with some washi tape and you’re good to go!

local markets :: ana ventura

and we’re back for another local markets’ feature! this has been the longest feature on the blog i believe! we will reach 100 artists soon! today i’m actually featuring someone whose work i’ve had the pleasure of seeing on an exhibition here in lisbon! this artist was actually there along with camilla engman, as both hosted an exhibition called “distant friends“. i was however too shy to introduce myself… the usual! so as you already saw by the title, our guest today is ana ventura, a visual artist living and working in lisbon.

Examples of Illustrations by Ana Ventura, a portuguese visual artist (1)

“a degree in painting from the lisbon school of fine-arts was never going to be enough for a someone creative like ana ventura. and so, with support from the erasmus program, in 1999 she took a course in printmaking, illustration and painting at the école supérieure d’art visuel la cambre, in brussels. she is a multi-facetted illustrator and artist, and her unique style is found in a wide variety of media, from illustrated adhesive tape to paper dolls, from book markers to decorative wall stickers, from postcards to clothes and accessories.”

what seduces me more in ana’s work has to do with the beautiful details and soft colours she uses. the details reveal some approach to all things natural,  as many of her traces represent tiny bushes, leaves and trees. actually the colours she uses can often be found in nature, such as the yellow, green and brown. the characters she draws come from her imaginary world to which we travel, once we lay our eyes on her art. i don’t think it’s possible not to make up stories in our heads, once we see the characters she draws. from their gestures and facial expressions, it’s possible to imagine what they think, what they say and a whole story behind it!

when i visited ana’s and camilla’s exhibition “distant friends” there were several envelopes that were used by both of the ladies to exchange their mail and they were so interesting, as they were fully written with messages and drawings by both. i always remember of their envelopes when i send one, because as we often leave the outside part as a place to write postal addresses, names and not much, their imagination in such a random object as an envelope left me amazed. i guess that this might be a difference between artists and those who are not that creative – you can create something special with about anything you see.

she has had solo and group exhibitions in portugal and abroad since 1996, and her most internationally recognized project has been her personalized all star sneakers for the centenary of converse in 2008. she regularly teaches in art workshops to those who are interested in discovering their creative voice. she is an artist at the gallery of the portuguese centre for silkscreen-printing (centro português de serigrafia-CPS); this was a technique that she used in the illustrations for the book “nove storie sull’amore”, the originals of which were exhibited in italy, spain and germany.”

as you can see, ana’s work has been featured in several art galleries across europe, which is actually something that i feel so proud of. we don’t hear much about visual artists whose work is featured abroad or we usually hear the same names over and over again. so it’s good to know that there are other artists that are being appreciated over our borders. go ahead and browse through ana’s work and find an admirable new world!

wednesday find :: emily isabella

in the world of beautiful things, emily isabella is there for sure! i found emily’s work though eva black’s feature called spaces. i’m a particular fan of these posts, because they show the office space of several creatives, some i already know so it’s wonderful to see where they work from every single day, others, like emily isabella, i had not heard about, so it’s pretty cool to find another exquisite artist and go through her work corners!

Emily Isabella at her office

i fell for this beautiful and unconventional office. the details are so gorgeous and i believe they can make you somehow travel through time. the images that she features on her interview about her work space make me remind of my childhood and what i think might have been my parent’s childhood as well. the dolls, the prints, the odd things she saves… it’s obviously where emily seeks for inspiration and the way you can actually feel all that inspiration on her work.

“emily isabella is one part designer, one part illustrator and one part dreamer. together these make up the studio known as emily isabella illustration and design. as a child, she wandered her family’s prairie, pressing queen anne’s lace flowers against her cheeks, pretending they were powder brushes. her work reflects this idealism and serves as a reminder to continue to tap into our imaginations in order to create a better world.”

i absolutely love when artists do what they do to make this world a better world, if not at least a happier world, which is the way i feel when i look at her work. the illustrations are so pretty and cute, they make me smile and that means i’m happy. as she says on eva black’s interview, “the goal of my personal brand is to bridge the gap between childhood and adulthood.”

asides from the notecards, you can also find emily’s work in tea towels and prints, and currently she has been working with other companies to create a wallpaper collection, and a clothing line with her designs and illustrations. of course, one of her dreams is to be able to illustrate toys and children’s books!

wednesday find :: samantha hahn

hello there lovely ones, how are you doing? oh i just hope you’re having a brighter day than we’re having here in lisbon! it’s been raining all day long, and i think this will keep going for the rest of the week! but honestly, it’s on these days that i feel more fortunate to work from home. i love to just wake up, go out for a walk with mr kobe, come back, have a quiet breakfast on my office and start working listening to the rain outside! i absolutely love rainy days when i’m inside my home, it feels so comfortable, doesn’t it?

moving on to the topic today, i am introducing samantha hahn’s work as a commercial illustrator. i believe i found out about samantha’s work right when i started exploring flickr, about 3 years ago. i fell in love with her watercolour illustrations, the colours she used, the delicate traces of her drawings. some of her watercolour typography work is quite known around blogs and pinterest and chances are you have come across with her work before, not knowing who was the artist.

i adore these illustrations above! look at that alexander mcqueen pink shoe, what a masterpiece! and then the j. crew illustration, so beautiful with the little flower details magnificently reproduced on the dress. i think i basically love watercolour, for its watery impression. the way colour dilutes in the water and creates those effects are so precious. and that is what samantha says on her creativity tips:

“i love (…) the element of surprise in how the watercolour will react with the paper and the amount of water on my brush.”

she has been invited by daily candy to illustrate their website and she was inspired by the girls in new york. the images above are from that project and they seem so whimsical, modern and with such a great character, don’t they? i wish i was a girl in new york, right now (oh how i miss that city!). you can also catch up on her work, by following her popular blog – maquette, and also buy something from her shop! my favourite is definitely the notebook! so sturdy and poetic at the same time! i’m in need of more organization for my daily life, so who knows?!
