limões e laranjas // lemons & oranges

Freshly picked lemon

a bit of country life, right in the big city. the best of two worlds! i would never move to the countryside, but i do love to spend a few days there during summer to relax in the most truthful way. i love to live in lisbon for everything it gives me, the possibilities, the diversity, its life, but on the other hand, i love to live in such a typical quarter of this city. people say hello to each other, people know their neighbours’ names, people at the grocery store know me and help me choose what i’ll make for dinner, and the friendly folks at the cafe know that i don’t need sugar on my espresso! it’s the kind of life i love.

on our backyard we’re picking lemons and oranges! i’ve been using lemons for recipes, and making a lot of orange juices (no one suffers from lack of vitamin c around!). it feels so good to be outside and finally catch some sun! we have so many plans for our backyard! i hope that we can start making some changes! all we need is the sun to be around for good! i have a few things in mind to plant, and we have some cool ideas to hang out outside with our friends!

new old things

it’s interesting how things evolve in our homes and how you do things that you didn’t usually do. i always found really interesting to read those stories of people who find couches, tables, and other furniture pieces on the street, ready to get dumped, bring them to their homes and give them a new life. a new fabric, a new colour and recycled furniture is ready to another life, ready to gather more stories of that family, ready to be a part of that home and the daily life of those persons. however, here in portugal we don’t find furniture on the street that often, and for most people picking those from the street into our homes, might be weird.

nevertheless, whenever i see something on the street to get picked up by the city hall men, i always try to figure out if i can use any of those pieces at home. usually things are completely broken and i have no means to save it, or by saving it i would be spending a whole lot of money. but here and there i find something that is worth taking with me! and the good thing is that mr twiggs is already into that mode too! i’m so proud of him!

here are three things we brought recently from the street! and i decided not to paint either of them, because i like their raw state!

an old drawer i found next to a tree. it was immediate “oh cute, you’re coming with me!”. when i’m walking mr kobe, i often come home with things, most of the times, just fruit wooden boxes to paint and use here and there. but i loved this small drawer with a dark grey colour! it serves so nicely hanging on this wall! and that is the living-room you are seeing and that is the door to the kitchen!

these two tables were brought by mr twiggs! he found them on the trash, and i like them like this. i was going to paint them white, but then i liked the way their raw look contrasts with the silver, the glass and the mirror! and of course, those ikea pillows also help on that corner!

i’m also a fan of using greenery around the house and branches i bring from my walks with mr kobe! i want to sew some hearts and hang them on the branches one day! so this is it for today! have a lovely weekend you all!

my new office

so here’s the thing, though we moved to a bigger place with a second room that could be (and was so far) my office, i wasn’t completely happy with it. i have to admit that though this house is amazing, i miss our old house light a lot. the sun coming inside our bedroom and kitchen in the morning, setting on the living-room, light was never a problem! i always saw it as a great thing, but now i see it an even more amazing thing. i’m so addicted to light, i need it so much during my day… i would not fit to move to those countries that don’t have much light during winter months. i kept buying white furniture for the other house, because it was tiny and i needed to feel it brighter and more spacious. now we have the space, but white furniture keeps doing the trick to make it even better!

so this saturday i convinced mr twiggs to move things around and i moved part of my office to our dining-room. i can look through the window all day long and look at the sky, our orange tree, the neighbours’ cats on our backyard, if it rains or if the sun shines. i’m happy now! and we have ourselves a room for guests, yet to be decorated! you can see that ikea is still my main source of furniture and accessories! the lamp was the last thing i bought, i wanted it for so long!

oh and that laptop belongs to mr twiggs, with which i work for the photo editing, as mine simply dies while i try to do that. i expect to soon replace it with a glorious and dreamy 21″ imac! but let’s move forward with baby steps, so right now i just need to get some work done and these laptops to continue to work just fine!

house tour // random details

hello there and happy weekend! this is just a quick post to show some details of our new house. after moving in the end of september the truth is we’ve been merely combining things around and haven’t yet shopped for anything new, though we are much in need, like lamps, curtains and rugs (oh please, give me rugs!). but today i felt like taking a few pictures around some details to share with you.

one thing i’ve been noticing a lot, and actually still trying to figure that out, is the light in this house. i love the new house, it’s way bigger than our first one, but the light here is tricky. we don’t have as much light as we did, and for me that is kind of a bummer. but of course, the fact that we have a walk-in closet, an office for me, and a backyard makes it less important. the thing is when taking and editing the photos, i realized that it took me a while to get the editing done, feeling it right, because it’s such a different place. and the light available, either coming from windows or furniture itself is really important. oh ok, rambles of a photographer, nevermind, let’s see the place!

above, my inherited rotary black phone! love it and will also paint it in another colour! a spring project maybe! below is our hallway, in decent size now! it’s one of the two rooms in the house, which doens’t get any natural light. we have that lamp lit all day long to create a cozy mood when we pass through there. and the giant leaf from a plant on our backyard! just a little greenery here too! oh as you can see christmas is already showing in some details!
