local markets :: kjoo

hello there folks, how are you doing? today we’re back to another local markets feature and i’m so happy to be sharing this artist with you! she has been among my favourites for ages and one of those artists whose work was always on the list for me to feature here. it’s colourful, it’s bold and unique. and i have a few that are my absolute favourites! today i want to introduce you kjoo by maria joão ribeiro.

Handmade Crocheted Bangles, Studs and Brooch by Kjoo

ok, my favourites? the turquoise statement studs! i love that colour so much! and they are quite bold! who wears studs nowadays anyway? it’s a bit like the 80′s without that vintage and 80′s look, with a handmade touch, use of metal details and a pop of colour in a bold way. so i’m so in love! but everything handmade by maria joão looks actually really cool and pretty!

also this bracelet is one of my favourites! the colours are perfect and the golden button makes the final detail! they are all a bit of statement pieces, which i find so interesting! the pleasure of nailing the look with an handmade piece is indeed a great pleasure! maria joão ribeiro founded kjoo and lives in palmela and is well-known for her exquisite taste in matching all these materials and colours, with handmade crochet. you can see bits of her day and work on her facebook page!

local markets :: trincar uvas

right on time for the grape season, today we have among us a lovely girl who comes from this country, but chose the netherlands to live. and i brought up the grape topic because her shop is called trincar uvas, which in our beloved language means to bite grapes! and as she says, it is one of her joyful pleasures (who can actually blame her for that?). joana pedroso is the one behind trincar uvas, which is an etsy shop dedicated to handmade jewelry, where natural elements make out with colours! trincar uvas is our local markets guest!

trincar uvas is where i get to express myself. my aesthetics. what makes my senses tingle. what excites me and at the same time makes me feel like i’m home. with trincar uvas i get to play with precise geometric shapes and give them the texture and color of embroidery thread. and it’s the contrast of things that inspires me. the contrast between old and new, geometric and organic, tribal and modern, natural and man made, and so on.. the opposites attract me!”

the way she introduces herself is also lovely… and i felt connected with her on some of her short sentences!

i was born in portugal
i live in the netherlands
i am in love
i am never satisfied
i get scared easily
i love to cook
i also love to eat
i try to be kind to people around me
i believe in common sense
i also write poetry
i love to dance
i wish i had a view

trincar uvas is on etsy, so it’s a fabulous idea for those christmas gifts you’re starting to wonder! and yes, i said christmas gifts! it’s not outside your door yet, but it’s coming and you know what a great way of saving some money and giving amazing presents anyway is? shopping early or through the year, that way you don’t spend a lot on one month only! such a smart idea!

{sneak-peek handmade pledge} :: elephantine

hi there you all lovelies, how are you doing today? are you starting this new week in a rocking way? mondays are such wonderful days (don’t you give me the eyes lady!), i know that for some of you, mondays are not that wonderful and actually end up being really tough, but i see mondays as a start of something new as every friday i unconsciously make a balance of how well (or not) the  week was. so though there is this bittersweet taste on sunday evenings, i do like mondays! and talking about sundays, let me share what i did yesterday, because it has to do with the post today!

actually let me share something first that all of you concerned with time management may want to know. i’m on flickr and i love blogs, no news there! but how do i manage the time to do everything and keep up with the blogs i love and the photographers/friends whose work i follow on flickr? i discipline myself into these task once a day/week. every single morning, while i’m having my breakfast comfortably sitting in front of the laptop, i go through the streams of my friends on flickr. and during weekends, from friday evening to sunday i catch up on the blogs. and yesterday i was catching up on this blog and thought that this lady really deserved a spot on this blog here! let me introduce you to rachel… she comes all the way from seattle.

rachel writes and creates and sells what she creates! she a lover of cats & dogs (i always loved this about people!). she studied graphic design, worked in a large branding firm and then took the leap of faith with her jewelry shop named elephantine. she creates simple jewelry pieces that reveal the sense of moderness along with a twist of classicism.

rachel’s blog is not just a blog where she shares what she has been creating, promotions and general information about her work. she shares a bit of her work, but also her life, her photography, her vision about what she finds along… and her challenges. and as she is this great photographer, which has also started exploring her skills in film photography (another reason for me to love this place), it’s a really beautiful & visual blog to visit.

asides from the blog and the jewelry shop, rachel also started another shop, called mignon kitchen co. which “carries a selection of curated goods for prepping, baking, serving, and sharing food, from everyday tools to little indulgences. ” if you love to cook, this is also a delightful place to visit and to shop (again… check the photography! i simply adore that photo with the tiny bottles and rain on the window). if you read her blog, she also shares recipes from time to time and short stories, as one of her dreams is to write a novel. and a special treat for those who love cats, yesterday i laughed as hard as i could when i read this post about her cat, rufus. i swear it was like visualizing every single sentence! enjoy elephantine, rachel & mignon! and we’ll be back tomorrow with more beauty!

ps. have you been enjoying the latest posts on film photography? i’m really excited for going back to film. it’s such a treat and an adventure!

{local markets} :: moldarina

hello there my friends, how are you doing? did you have a good start this week? after a weekend so relaxing and filled with work at a relaxing pace, i’m trying my very best not to feel overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done this week! i keep trying to do one thing at a time and not feel the stress, and i avoid that when i try to not think of all the things i need to do after i finish with the thing i’m doing right now. so today i bring you some news!

one is that local markets is back, two is that local markets will be slightly different this year. and what will be different? well, as the new year started i felt the need to think about some changes on this blog, because as i’m a person that enjoys doing several things i need these things to be more flexible. so some features needed to be redesigned, so that they could have that flexibility. local markets was one of the features that needed to change. so i’ll keep promoting other artists, designers, bloggers or even ideas, but there won’t be an interview for every single artist. i need to have the possibility to share those amazing artists i find, without the pressure of having an interview to share. but today we’ll actually have an interview. ah, that’s right! do you know who is here today with us? sonia! sonia is the owner of moldarina. let’s know more about her…

hello there, how are you? so thank you for being here… let’s start with a simple question! what can you tell us about yourself? hello! my name is sónia nunes, i’m 32, i live in a small city in the centre of portugal called pombal with my 4 year-old daughter and my husband. i have a degree in social education. i’m a dreamer and always liked to be free. i’m the person behind moldarina, my handmade textile jewelry brand that fits my way of being.

how did your business start? what made you take the plunge? five years ago i experience the pleasure of creating, after a casual visit at a jewelry supply store. since then i started a self-taught path where i learned to embroider, knit, crochet, sew, among many other things. opening moldarina in 2011 was the outcome of this journey and a turning point in my career, because i decided to dedicate myself full time to this project leaving behind social education.

do you do anything else besides that or is it possible for you to make a living out of your business? i’m currently dedicating myself in full-time managing moldarina and i hope make a living of my textile jewelry.

where do you seek for inspiration? people and their thoughts, relationships and feelings are my greatest source of inspiration.

what do you do to promote your business? what has been helpful? opening moldarina on big cartel and creating a page on facebook were my first steps. i am currently contacting other online sites that promote creative small business like mine. all of these strategies increased my site traffic.

portugal is going through some major financial problems and people feel that hey cannot afford a lot of the things they could in the past, how do you think that will affect your business? the crisis affect all businesses, both in portugal and any other country. i do not think about it. i care about the quality of my work because quality always brings customers.

so what do you think? i love how modern and vintage these pieces are! sonia did an excellent job creating these pieces, because it’s not easy to create something that make you think about something modern and antique at the same time! and finding about these artists is what drives me to keep up with this feature! i hope you keep enjoying local markets! are you following us on facebook? oh and don’t forget to visit sonia on her shop & facebook as well!
