december break :: gosto design

as i’ve been in a netherlands kind of mood this week, let’s keep it that way, shall we? after two posts about the places i visited last weekend on my business trip to the netherlands, here is a lady who owns a business there, but comes from this sunny country on the left corner of europe! that lady is sonia van der zwaan barrigas, which probably some of you know already by her amazing taste in interior decoration and of course, her online shop – gosto design!

“gosto design & lifestyle is an inspirational (web)shop located in the netherlands specialized in design and unique products with a north european twist. the word gosto comes from the portugese, a nod to my origin meaning style or taste, but also can be interpreted as a verb inflection for i love.

our offer reflects a carefully selection of products where not only high-end design is represented but also design of upcoming talents. products with a story, known who’s behind it, that contributes to a sustainable development and are produced in a fair manner for environment and people.”

sonia represents several well-known designers, illustrators and brands and you can find her online shop filled with beautiful home accessories that represent either the scandinavian style and the latest interior design trends. to be honest with you, it’s very hard for me to pick some favourites, because i simply can’t choose. there are way too many goodies on this online place! lamps, pillows, posters, boxes, candle holders… and you are free to go for a minimalist black and white, white and wood, black and wood or go crazy with beautiful colours!

sonia’s home has been featured in several places, as her incredible taste in decorating has been collecting fans all over the world. her home with a scandinavian style looks above all things really comfortable, elegant, but relaxed and warm. and who doesn’t want to feel that way at home? the thing is that this is hard to get, you need to have that particular eye for things! take a sneak-peek into her home here and delight yourself!

regarding the brands she represents, it’s funny and interesting that you can find either snug as well as donna wilson’s work, and both have been guests here on the blog! so if you are in the mood for some new things for your home (let’s forget about christmas gifts, as i think that it might be a bit too late for online orders right now) this is the place for you! i hope you enjoy this suggestion!

December-Break

monday’s favourites

hello lovelies, how are you doing? did you have a nice weekend? we were cozy and warm in our place most of the time, as a rainy weekend didn’t allow for much more! and speaking of being warm, today’s favourites are all about that, though in a different point-of-view! this feature is about to become really interior design related, but i love it so much! today’s favourites are all about black and white in our homes, and though when we think about black and white we think about minimalist and somehow a cold environment, i want to bring your attention to different ways of adding these two colours without turning your room into a cold room!

Details of Black and White in Room Decor

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7

so let’s start by asking you if you feel these rooms as cold rooms? i hope not, but if you do please do give me feedback on that! this blogging thing is only fun with feedback from that side where you stand! i don’t feel these cold because there are other textures and colours mixed in these rooms, instead of a plain black & white decor. we see those around and i like them on a visual kind of opinion, not for my home though.

i think these above work due to several reasons and those reasons are all within my personal taste, which is whether not having a white floor, mixing up other warm colours like mustard, yellow or an overall grey mood with just a few accents in black & white… i love colour, but i wouldn’t like a colourful home, with different colours all over the place. i happen to have wood floors with a wood colour (ah! imagine that!), so i end up mixing white furniture, inspired 50s mid-century furniture and i will add some black & white accents along with one or two colours. i don’t like the matchy-matchy, but something with character, warm, cozy and that says someone lives there, without being too messy!

so what are you thoughts on this?

wednesday find :: varpunen

hello hello, feeling good today? hope so!! first of all, let me just ask you one thing: are you a fan on facebook? if you are i’d like to thank you on a more personal note for all the support you have been showing since i ever joined facebook, and most particularly since i started the new page in september! i couldn’t feel happier and blessed (huge cliche, i know, but i do feel happy and blessed) for realizing that exactly since september i was able to gather almost 1000 fans. i was close to 2000 on my old page and when i started this new one, i knew that it would be hard! those over 1800 fans wouldn’t magically appear on my new page. it would be starting all over again, though not exactly from scratch.

i feel very happy when i see you interacting with me, that leaves me on the clouds! because posting something just for the sake of sharing is one thing, i’ll expect you to react to that, to click on like, to comment, but i’m not asking for a particular reaction. but what i appreciate the most if when i ask you something, an opinion from you and you take the time to answer it, helping me to make decisions and therefore, as i hope, to better my business. this morning i placed two questions as i was having second thoughts on two photos and the editing choices and your answers were pretty clear and helped choose! so thank you so much for that! you guys rock!!

moving on to spectacular things, stylist and very very scandinavian, as yesterday we were on an interior styling mood, let us continue today! today’s find is varpunen, a shop with beautiful baskets made in PVC-laminated white polyester designed by susanna vento, who is the blogger behind… varpunen and a well-known interior designer.

these sacks come in several sizes and i think all of the sizes can have such an interesting use! whether for the kitchen, to have flowers inside, clothing, toys, magazines… you name it. i am a fan of all the designs, but particularly the ones with triangles and more colours. these are an absolute charm, and though so discreet, they do make a bit of a statement as in “i could have had anything else for this function, but i chose this stylish sack!”

suki is also a blogger as i mentioned above and it’s really interesting and filled with pretty things, inspirations coming from the north – finland. it’s interesting how i become even more addicted to scandinavian blogs in this time of the year! winter is so more beautiful there, i guess! they may say the opposite like we are the ones with sunny and bright days, even in the winter. but in any case, you should browse susanna’s blog and shop for some eye candy, during winter or summer! ah!

local markets :: catarina batista interiores

hello lovely friends, how are you doing? i bet most of my american friends and readers are preparing themselves for a delicious thanksgiving! i think this would definitely be the kind of holiday i would bring to portugal! saying thanks, gathering the whole family around a table with food, actually this part always sounds good to me in any case! and latins we love gathering people over a good and delicious meal and just talk and eat for hours! and talking about tables and such, local markets today is about beautiful rooms as our guest is a lovely and very talented interior designer, with whom i had the pleasure of working a few weeks ago – catarina batista interiores.

catarina batista is an architect who shifted her professional course to interior design about two years ago. she has worked with a famous portuguese tv show querido mudei a casa, and since then she has opened her own atelier and has been working by herself. i am deeply in love with her aesthetics and sense of style to bring the best out of a room!

recognizing that light is such an important source of life in a room, she carefully plays with the existing objects in a room or home, and builds up the idea she has in mind, according to her client’s wishes. this living room had already plenty of the objects you see here, but she was able to add extra light and pops of colour to make it airy, lighter and elegant, and at the same time, really cozy! i mean look at that couch! don’t you feel like grabbing a beautiful blanket and crawl into it with homemade cookies and a good movie?

when i was photographing this room she had finished, we were talking about her working process and she amazed me by her humble attitude with her clients, making her best to work with her clients’ tastes, respecting their will, but also bringing out the best in that project with her professional knowledge. and sometimes we don’t see interior designers with this honest and respectful attitude, truth be told. this room had to be finished in a very tight schedule to provide a new room for the hostess’ birthday party and everything was looking amazing, airy and delicious with her colour touches and even cupcakes to add a sweet spot!

catarina has also a special project for newlyweds (or for those who are about to get married), who cannot afford a complete makeover of their home, wish to make it as time goes by, or even wish their wedding guests to help with that process, which is providing a project with changes they should be making in their rooms, with detailed information about objects they can buy, their prices and further instructions to make their home feel exactly that – their home. this way she helps them on the decision making part and they can change things at their pace.

i was really happy to work with catarina and i cannot wait to see more of her work! this girl has got what it takes, definitely!
