stories from lisbon :: café da garagem

um domingo destes, um daqueles em que o tempo esteve bom à séria, saímos os dois de casa, cada um com a sua máquina fotográfica para um passeio fotográfico por essa lisboa. o nosso objectivo era passear pela parte histórica, mas principalmente descobrir um café do qual tínhamos ouvido falar, e há muito queríamos conhecer. não tinha expectativas nenhumas, sabia que teria uma vista engraçada, e nada mais. e claro, estas coisas acontecem mesmo assim, porque neste domingo estava a sentir-me pouco inspirada para fotografias. era daqueles dias em que a sensação era de que já tinha tirado as fotografias todas em lisboa, que poderia tirar. levei a máquina por levar, porque também nestas coisas não se deve arriscar, não é verdade?

e claro, o que é que aconteceu? descobrimos um sítio maravilhoso, com uma vista deslumbrante sobre a graça. um café cheio de detalhes giros, vintage, com cores deliciosas, a pedir uma fotografia aqui e outra acolá, e mais uma para levar para casa. um atendimento simpático e descontraído, uma tosta, um cheesecake e um copo de vinho branco… e ali ficámos durante uma parte da tarde a gozar a nossa descoberta. valeu a pena subir aquelas escadas até à costa do castelo para chegar ali, pousar as coisas e respirar fundo. o café era nosso apenas, a vista também, e as cadeiras eram à nossa escolha. foi um domingo que deixa saudades, daquelas que se sentem assim que chegamos a casa.

once upon a sunday, one of those nice sundays with really good weather, we went out carrying both of our cameras for a photo walk! well, the idea was not only a simple photo walk, but we had a place in our minds. i had no expectations and to be honest i was feeling less inspired that day! do you know those days in which you don’t feel like photographing this or that, because you feel you already did it a million times before? it was exactly one of those days! but of course, as photographer, i also know that you should never go to a new place and find yourself “cameraless”. 

we went by tram to this historical part of lisbon and went up the hills and dozens and dozens of cobblestone stairs, just to find this particular place we were looking for. i knew that this cafe would have a great view and that was about it. i was not expecting what we found, because it blew me away.  to start the whole place is inside a theater, so you kind of feel the artistic mood in the walls and in every detail they chose to be a part of that place. and then when you go down the stairs and find yourself on the cafe with an amazing view over graça, a cafe filled with vintage details and quirky choices, a couple of tables made of old doors, crochet table cloths, small vases with flowers, a dozen of old chairs all painted with the same colour, facing the huge windows… no clients yet, you feel like you’re about to have quite a moment there. 

a vegie toast, a glass of white wine, a cheesecake and a coffee later we were feeling like we were having the time of our life there. we were filled with excitement with our discovery and glad that we could enjoy that in such a good weather. the people there are very nice and easy going, and we noticed we had arrived at the perfect time, when the place was empty. when we left was already full. i hope you have the chance of finding and exploring this place on your own if you travel to lisbon! and if you want more about lisbon, take a peek at the whole guide here!

new work // lisboa é linda!

que me desculpem os moradores das outras cidades, que poderão ser igualmente bonitas, mas cada um defende o que é seu e onde se sente bem! não nasci em lisboa (e há-de chegar uma reportagem da minha cidade natal), mas sinto esta cidade como minha, é onde me sinto em casa e cada vez que regresso aqui há um sorriso nos meus lábios (até quando regresso de nova iorque!). há qualquer coisa aqui que me faz sentir que pertenço aqui. talvez seja a luz de que todos falam, a arquitectura belíssima, as cores das paredes e das portas, as ruas estreitas, as escadinhas, as colinas, a diversidade cultural, os museus e cinemas, os miradouros e cafés escondidos, as tascas e tabernas, e as lojas de flores e pastéis de nata. ou então é tudo isto… que me faz apaixonar por esta cidade todos os dias.

hoje continuamos o passeio com o filipe, o nosso amigo em lisboa, que acolhe os turistas e lhes mostra o que de melhor há para mostrar em lisboa. seguimos do martim moniz pela mouraria, e por aí andámos até ao castelo e depois graça. descobri recantos novos, candeeiros bonitos, e novos miradouros, ainda que pequeninos e estreitos. o sol acompanhou-nos sempre para afugentar o vento, que teimou em se fazer convidado numa tarde tão bonita!

let’s keep on the lisbon is beautiful mood, just like yesterday! as i shared with you yesterday, filipe is the person behind a very creative project, which consists in designing tour guides for very small tourist groups, taking them on a long walk through several districts and places, sharing stories about lisbon, and also providing them with excellent tips for the rest of their stay in town. i had the chance of being booked by his clients and it was through them that i met his project. 

lisbon is amazingly beautiful, and on this day, though the wind made its non-invited appearance, we were able to enjoy the sunny day, the viewpoints, the narrow streets, the corners, the balconies, the beautiful and charming black lamps, and so much more. even for me, it was amazing to find out stories and new streets and nooks! 

lisbon is not my hometown, and i will somewhere in the future do a photo shoot on my hometown, but this is where i feel at home, i feel good and happy. even when i’m returning from vacations, i’m always happy for returning to this lovely city, even when returning from new york (imagine that!). i’m not sure what it is, but it had me at the first glance. maybe it’s its light, the corners, the architecture, the colourful walls and weathered doors and windows, the hills, the viewpoints and the cafes, the grilled sardines in june, its pastries or the flower shops, the museums and movie theaters, or maybe it’s all of this. lisbon is in my heart and this is how i see it!

new work // a friend in lisbon

hoje trago uma coisa muito boa, ora não fosse esta coisa sobre lisboa! não sei se este post é mais para os de cá, se para os de lá que vêm cá passar férias! ainda assim, e porque fazer turismo cá dentro nunca fez mal a ninguém, espero que prestem atenção ao que vou partilhar de seguida! primeiro de tudo, quero que se lembrem desta sessão! esta família sueca veio passar uns dias a lisboa, quiseram agendar uma sessão fotográfica comigo e na troca de emails mencionaram que iam fazer uma visita guiada com um rapaz simpático, de seu nome filipe e que se intitula a friend in lisbon!

no dia da sessão, esta família já tinha feito a visita guiada com o filipe, e explicou-me como é que tudo correu! achei o projecto do filipe maravilhoso! eu também quero um a friend in lisbon quando for para fora! então mas quem é o filipe afinal? o filipe é um rapaz com formação em história, e que entre as muitas coisas que tem feito na vida, o jornalismo foi quase sempre uma constante. não muito satisfeito com o caminho que a economia levava, resolveu arregaçar as mangas e lançar um outro projecto na sua vida – o de fazer visitas guiadas em lisboa, inteiramente personalizadas, apenas para grupos pequeninos (uma família, um grupo de amigos…), e que se assemelhassem a qualquer coisa como “temos um amigo em lisboa que nos vai mostrar uns sítios giros e contar umas histórias”.

antes de conhecer pessoalmente os seus clientes, o filipe lança algumas questões por email, de modo a saber mais sobre os gostos deles, o que fazem e quem são. depois traça então o seu percurso, procura agendar a visita para o início das férias dos clientes, para que depois possa passar-lhes uma série de informações e dicas essenciais para que os restantes dias corram da melhor forma, como por exemplo, que restaurantes são bons, quando visitar os museus, como poupar dinheiro nos transportes, etc. um dia destes fui acompanhar o filipe numa visita com um grupo de alemães e foi bastante giro! apesar do vento frio que se fazia sentir, lisboa estava radiante e consegui aprender uma série de coisas novas sobre a cidade!

começámos no rossio, com uma paragem na ginginha, depois seguimos para a igreja que está mesmo ao lado, daí passeámos pela avenida da liberdade até ao torel, do torel descemos até ao martim moniz e por hoje a visita fica por aqui! amanhã mostro o resto da tarde!

this might be one of those posts that i actually don’t know who’s going to love it more, if those who don’t live here, or the others who live in this country. but first things first! a few weeks ago, i had a photo session with a beautiful and very charming swedish family, remember this? well, this family had told me that they had booked a tour guide in lisbon, but it was a different concept than the usual tour guides. this was one lovely fellow showing lisbon around in a very personal way, he creates custom lisbon tours as he walks with very small groups, like a family or a group of friends, and shows lisbon around, tells a few stories, just like if these tourists had a friend in lisbon who was spending some time with them. i loved the idea! wouldn’t you love this every time you travel, instead of boring tours with lots of historical details you’ll never remember again?

so long story short, i contacted filipe, who is indeed the friend in lisbon and asked him about his work and how we could work together. and so as soon as he had another booked tour, i was able to join him and his clients for a photographic tour around the places he took this lovely group of german folks! and so i did a few weeks ago, on a very cold and windy sunday, i revisited lisbon, listened to several stories that were unknown to me, and toured with them. though the cold, it was a sunny afternoon and filipe did a great job! the way he tries his best to fit the tour into the type of clients he has (he plans everything ahead according to the clients he has), the way he tries to book his tour right in the beginning of his clients’ vacations, so he can pass a few tips on restaurants, museums, transports and safety, so that they can enjoy lisbon in a more pleasant way… is indeed amazing!

and this is just another story of how people are creative with their jobs and their way of making a living! filipe is graduated in history, and has worked for a long time in journalism, but since he spotted the economy going down, he decided to create another project that would fit his needs and knowledge, and i guess he did a great job on this!

do passeio das flores da rua, encontrei ainda muitas casas giras, umas abandonadas (ou com dono algures neste mundo, que ou não se preocupa, ou não tem dinheiro para se preocupar) e outras imperiosas e ocupadas. casas em lisboa que parecem trazidas de paris, e outras que não parecem estar em lisboa. gosto de ver as casas e gostava ainda mais de explorar as que estão abandonadas e de saber o que fazem as pessoas que vivem nas outras casas! ai a curiosidade e a imaginação! gosto de imaginar que famílias viveram ali, o que faziam e o porquê de algumas casas estarem ao abandono. gostava de poder comprá-las e voltar a dar-lhes a vida que merecem, sem lhes estragar a personalidade. são casas, são histórias… muitas histórias, que eu gostava de saber.

from that walk where i spotted a lot of beautiful wild flowers! i also spotted some beautiful houses, some abandoned (or with an owner somewhere in this world that either does not care, or does not have the money). houses in lisbon that seem to be brought from paris and others that don’t seem to exist in lisbon at all. i love to find these houses, would love to explore those abandoned ones and find out what the people that live inside the others, actually do. oh my curiosity and imagination! i like to imagine the life of the families who once lived there, what they did and what happened to make these houses abandoned nowadays. i’d love to be able to buy them and give them the life they deserve, without tearing apart all their personality. these are houses and these are stories… many stories, that i would love to know about.
