hi there, how are you? are you having a good day? are you ready to take a break and sit down for a cup of coffee or tea, with a slice of homemade cake? ok, so you’re on the right place! actually just started to rain here and i already heard a thunder, so i’ll be glad to join you! the place i’m about to talk about is not typical from lisbon or even portugal, but came all the way from austria! the story is actually pretty interesting and makes me smile, because my city is that beautiful! once upon a time, one austrian boy while in college in austria, decided to come to lisbon to study for a semester. and he liked it so much, the weather, the beach, the people, the light… that he kept coming back with his friends, mainly to surf. and one time they started to think about a way of staying here, because this was too good to leave behind once more. so from those ideas, this amazing place was born – kaffeehaus, 4 years ago.
as i’ve been doing lately, i’ve been contacting the owners/managers of the places i like the most in lisbon and ask them for permission to go there and take a few photos. i let them know that as a blogger, i’m writing up a city guide for lisbon and i would love to include their place as i myself am a customer. and this time, christoph was nice not only for allowing to take all the pictures i wanted, but he also sat down and told his story. and it’s curious, because if you search for this place, you’ll find several reviews that are not that nice, mainly because of the interior style, the food and the price. but i’ll be very honest, i still like this place and i like the way it’s decorated, i certainly like the food and to be again very honest, i understand the price. and i choose to pay it whenever i feel like it. and there is a plus, dogs are allowed inside!
this is one of the places with brunch in lisbon, as they have been spreading around in lisbon, so now it’s like a trend! a place that wants to be “dignified” among its customers, needs to offer brunch, because it makes sense! we have a different lifestyle than other europeans, we eat late, we go out for drinks late and we go back home really really late… so late that it’s common to eat some breakfast first before going to bed! well, that is what i used to do 3 years ago (you can laugh all that you want, i grew old, it’s a fact!). so this brunch trend is perfect for us. we get out of bed later than the usual, most of the times we have a really nice weather, so we want to go out for a while and we don’t feel like cooking, so we go out for brunch! and one of those places can actually be kaffeehaus, which was meant to be an austrian cafe, that can take you back to another country just by going inside.
again, some people say that in austria or germany cafes are not like this at all, but either way, my friends, i really enjoy it inside. i find it elegant and cozy, i love the chairs (and the fact that they mixed red chairs among the others!), the small black lamps are really amazing and the window filled with magazines is really interesting and very handy! and i like the coffee! it’s served in a nice like-silver tray with a small glass of water! and that is so pretty!
so this is another place you can go to grab something to eat while in lisbon, and another plus on this place is its location, as it’s right in chiado, one of the most beautiful quarters of this city. so tell me, what do you think about this place?
